Patriotism in Islam
Patriotism in Islam Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem As Salamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh Patriotism is love for one's country, loyalty and devotion to it, desire to grow and prosper collectively or as a community. Although the Westphalian state system formally separates the church and the state on the ground that spirituality and faith cannot coexist with love for one’s own country. However, Islam does not consider these two elements anti-thetical. Loving one's country and its people is a good trait of the Muslims, as our beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) said : ‘Love of your country (patriotism) is a part of your faith’. Islam does not forbid a Muslim to love his motherland/homeland or the country in which he lives or grows up. What is reprehensible is basing one’s feelings of loyalty and disavowal on that, and loving and hating on that basis.
